MAGGIE THOMPSON AKA MAKWA STUDIO

MAKWA pronounced like "mukwa" means bear in the Ojibwe language.

Makwa Studio was started my Maggie Thompson in the Twin Cities area in 2014.  

Maggie Thompson is a textile artist and designer with a focus on knitwear and tapestry. She was born and raised in Minneapolis, Minnesota with a Waldorf education which sparked her passion for textiles at a very young age. In 2013, Maggie received her BFA in Textile Design from the Rhode Island School of Design and is currently back in Minneapolis. Most of her work is inspired by her Native Ojibwe heritage along with her passion for skateboarding and surfing culture. For her fine art, she works in a variety of mediums from machine knitting to weaving, exploring ideas of Native authenticity and what it means to be a contemporary Native woman.
